Indian Market Breadth

How the 1,000 most-traded NSE stocks are doing as a group, every 20 minutes while the market is open, with final figures each weekday evening. It helps judge how risky the market is, not which way it will go.

    How this page works

An index like the Nifty 50 shows what its biggest companies did. Breadth counts what all the stocks did: how many are rising, making new highs or trending up. This page uses the 1,000 most-traded NSE stocks each month, counted equally, so it mostly reflects mid-sized and small companies. The two can disagree for months, and that disagreement is often the message.

What it's good for. When breadth is weak or fading, falls in mid and small companies have tended to be deeper and breakouts have failed more often. It does not say whether the market will rise or fall over the next few weeks. Read it as a tilt, not a switch, and watch the trend of the lines, not single days. There are no buy or sell signals here, by design.

The cards show today's readings while the market is open (provisional, every 20 minutes), otherwise the last close's. Each is placed against every session since its first date ("Higher than on 80 in 100 days since Sep 2015"), with its value a week, a month and three months ago.

Universe. The 1,000 NSE stocks (EQ/BE series, no ETFs) with the highest average daily traded value over the previous ~6 months (126 sessions), re-picked on the first trading day of each month and held for the month.

The Nifty's realised volatility over the last 20 sessions (standard deviation of daily log returns × √252).

    Data, limits and honesty notes
    • Source: all prices come from Nubra (read-only market data). Industry labels come from NSE's Nifty Total Market constituent list; the calendar is hand-maintained. Nothing else.
    • History is shorter than 2015 for some readings. Nubra's daily stock and Nifty/VIX history starts 18 Feb 2015, so the first universe can be picked in Sep 2015 and one-year highs/lows start about a year after that. Smallcap 250 and Midcap 150 start Feb 2019. Each card says "since <date>".
    • Survivorship bias: only stocks listed today are in the history. Companies that delisted, merged or were suspended since 2015 are missing, which flatters past breadth (fewer losers). Treat old percentiles with that in mind.
    • Split-adjusted prices, unadjusted volume: Nubra adjusts prices for splits and bonuses but not volumes. For the last ~6 months this is corrected using Nubra's own unadjusted reference prices; for older months it isn't, so a stock that split inside an older 6-month window may have been ranked too low for that month's universe.
    • Equal weight: every stock counts once, whatever its size.
    • Intraday readings are provisional and are replaced by the evening's final figures.
